Alexandra Portney, LMSW

Licensed Master Social Worker

“Therapy can be a space to feel understood, gain clarity, and take meaningful steps toward the changes you want to make”

ABOUT Alexandra Portney

Alexandra works with adolescents (16+), adults, and families who are looking to better understand themselves, navigate challenges, and make meaningful changes in their lives. She takes a warm, collaborative, and goal-oriented approach, meeting clients where they are while helping them identify what they want to change and take practical steps toward those objectives.

She works with clients to build on their strengths, develop effective strategies, and move from insight to action, providing encouragement and accountability along the way. Alexandra believes therapy can be both a supportive space and a place to build confidence, resilience, and lasting skills. She values cultural humility and speaks both English and Russian.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Alexandra brings a diverse professional background to her work as a therapist. Before entering mental health, she taught Russian and worked in culturally diverse settings, experiences that strengthened her ability to connect with people from different backgrounds and perspectives.

Alexandra has experience in private practice working with adolescents, adults, and couples. Her background in teaching and multicultural environments informs her patient, adaptable, and engaging approach, while her clinical experience allows her to help clients identify goals, build sensible skills, and create meaningful change.

CLINICAL FOCUS

Alexandra works with clients experiencing anxiety, relationship concerns, life transitions, and challenges related to personal growth. She takes a strengths-based, systems-oriented, and integrative approach, drawing from CBT, ACT, and insight-oriented therapy to help clients better understand themselves, strengthen relationships, and work toward meaningful goals.

She is particularly interested in supporting adolescents and adults through life transitions, as well as couples and families navigating relational challenges. She also has an interest in working with veterans and service members, informed by her experience as a military spouse and working for the military, and with individuals navigating pregnancy and the transition to first-time parenthood.
