Hernan Alvarez Cordano is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Certified Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Therapist, Certified EMDR Therapist, and Beck Institute Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist. Hernan has a passion for helping others. He earned his master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Psychology, along with certification in Spiritual Direction from Divine Mercy University in Virginia. Hernan also has a background in philosophy and theology, earning his master’s degree in theology in Peru and obtaining his license in clinical psychology in Chile. He is currently in his fourth year of a PsyD program in clinical psychology in Virginia.
Hernan has experience providing counseling and coaching to individuals, couples, families, communities, and groups of diverse ages and backgrounds. In recent years, Hernan has worked in private practice, within the behavioral health system at Adventist HealthCare Hospital, and at a clinical agency. Hernan approaches therapy by viewing each person as a unique, one-of-a-kind being with deep intrinsic value. He believes in a holistic approach to care and strives to incorporate various sciences and tools to provide his clients with a meaningful and insightful understanding of what it means to be human.
In his therapy practice, Hernan employs an integrative approach that combines cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), existential-humanistic therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy, incorporating philosophical and theological elements. He specializes in mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, trauma, behavioral issues, and spiritual struggles. Most importantly, Hernan respects each person’s wants and needs in their journey toward healing and self-fulfillment, taking into account their cultural background, customs, sexual orientation, beliefs, and perspectives. Hernan provides therapy in English, Spanish, and Italian.
